Attention: Chefs, Cooks, Bakers and Start Up Food Entrepreneurs

Do you have a recipe that brings rave reviews every time you make it?

* * *

Have you heard “you should sell that!” too many times to count?

* * *

If you’ve been thinking, “hey, maybe I should make this a business,”
NOW is the perfect time to get started!

How many times have you heard someone screech, “Holy cow – this is SO good! You should sell it!” after tasting your secret recipe? Have you been thinking it’s a nice idea, but not really practical, especially “in this economy?”

Let me share a little secret with you…

There actually isn’t a more perfect time to put your recipe to work for you than now. Think about it, job security has gone the way of the unicorn, so if you’ve got an idea, why not take charge of your own destiny?

Just like you, I listened to friends suggest I start a business from a family cookie recipe for years. But I already had a full time job and wasn’t looking for a second one. Sometimes I would allow myself to fantasize what it would be like to approach a local café and sell them cookies for their shop. Customers would go wild for them and voila! The business would be a success.

Ha Ha! Like I said, it was a fantasy.

Then one day, I didn’t have a full time job and I started seriously considering the cookie company idea. I started looking into what to do, how to start, and the more I researched the more questions and I had and the more frustrated I became. None of this information was in one place. One person would tell me one thing and someone else would tell me something contradictory. I spoke with people at different organizations who seemed like they wanted to help, but their information was based in experience from 50 years ago. I just wanted to make sure I was doing everything “right,” but it was difficult to know what was right.

Though a lot of luck, determination and the kindness of others, I stumbled through to build Zen Rabbit Baking Company into a successful business. (Rachael Ray just featured one of our products as her Snack of the Day!) Now I’d like to help other start-up food entrepreneurs create wildly successful businesses of their own.

I wish I’d had this roadmap six years ago

For the past couple of years, I’ve been getting phone calls from people who heard about me through a friend or colleague; people who have recipes that they want to turn into a business. They ask, where do I start? How do a find a place to bake? Where can I buy ingredients wholesale? What licenses do I need? How much insurance is enough?

Sometimes after a call, I’d think, oh, I should have told her x, y and z too. Or sometimes the person didn’t even know what questions to ask. So I started putting together an outline of the things a startup food entrepreneur needs to know.

When I think about all the time and money I spent figuring this out when I was starting up, sometimes it makes me mad. How much more quickly could the success have come, if only I’d had someone to help me step by step?! But no worries, I managed. And now fortunately for you, the benefit of my trials can propel you to success way faster!
